Asylum
Seeking Communities in the North East of England - Quarterly Statistics as
at December 2005
- As at December
2005 there were 3287 asylum seekers in the North East in NASS
accommodation, a decrease of (4.58%) from September 2005. The
majority, 1,081 (32.9%), are living in Newcastle [Page 4, 5]
- The main
nationalities of asylum seekers in the North East are Iranian (12.2%),
Turkish (7.3%) and Angolan (7.2%). [Page 6]
- The total
number of asylum seekers in the UK who are supported by NASS
(The National Asylum Support Service) is 49,430, a decrease of 4% from
the previous quarter. Greater London has the largest number with 11,300 followed
by Yorkshire and Humberside 8,020.

- 6,165 Asylum
applications in the quarter nationally 2% lower than previous quarter,
(6,315). The main countries of origin were Iran (13.3%), Eritrea (9.6%) and Afghanistan
(8.27%). [Page 8]
- The number
applying for NASS support nationally was 6,030 a decrease of 12% from
the previous quarter. The main nationalities applying for NASS
support were Iran
(15.9%), Eritrea
(9.2%) and Somalia (7.29%). [Page

- A total of 5645
asylum applications received initial decisions, 13% lower than the
previous quarter. The number awaiting a decision was 6,400.
10% of initial decisions were granted asylum in Q4. [Page 10]
- Successful
applications for Section 4 (Hard Case) in Q4: 960, 36% lower than
previous quarter - mostly from Iraqis.
- 5,060 appeals
were received, 7% lower than previous quarter and 5,540 were determined,
and were 52% lower than in Q4 2004. [Page 12].
- 214,500
applications received in countries in the EU15, 239,800 received in EU25
countries, Total for Europe was
255,300, the grand total of Applications was 326,900 (Jan-Dec 2005)

- 235,300
asylum requests submitted in the 36 Industrialised Countries in the
first nine months, 181,000 new applications submitted in Europe in the first nine months. Number of new
asylum requests in the United Kingdom fell 24%
during January - September compared with same period 2004.

This section provides only a brief overview of the statistics available

Asylum statistics for
2001
- Overall there was an 11% drop in asylum application in 2001. The
overall number of people applying for asylum was 71,700.
- The numbers applying asylum in-country was 46,200, a drop of 15%
since 2000.
- The numbers applying at the port of entry was 25,500, a drop of 2%
from 2000.
- It is estimated that 31% of asylum seekers received a positive
decision in 2001, a figure of 22,227.
Asylum
statistics for 2000
- The number of asylum applications for 2000 was 80,315 (excluding
dependants), a 13% increase in applications since 1999.
- The increase in 2000 was the smallest percentage increase for three
years.
- Including dependants, the number of asylum applications for 2000 was
estimated to be 98,900.
- The proportion of applications made in-county (by people already in
the UK) rather than on arrival was 68% in 2000, compared with 59% in
1999 and 50% in 1998.
- 2,733 unaccompanied children (aged 17 or under) applied for asylum
in the UK in 2000.
- Of this 2,733, 1, 394 were made at port and 1,339 were made in
country
- Of the initial decisions made in 2000 under normal procedures,
10,375 (11%) were to recognize the applicant as a refugee and grant
asylum. 11,495 (12%) were not granted refugee status, but were granted
exceptional leave to remain. 75, 7680 (78%) were refused asylum or
exceptional leave to remain.
